Roger C. Knight

September 16, 1937 — October 29, 2017

Roger Curtis Knight 9-16-1937  to  10-29-2017Roger Curtis Knight was born at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon on September 16, 1937 to parents Curtis and Dora Virginia Knight. He had a sister, Susan. His family stayed in Portland so he attended Highland Grade School and graduated from Benson High School in 1955. A neighbor introduced Roger to his bride to be, Phyllis M. Piazza, in 1956 and they married in 1957 and had their first son, Eric Michael in 1961 and their second son, Jeffrey Scott in 1963.Roger was serving his printer apprenticeship at the Oregon Journal until they went on strike, and because he had a family to support and an apprenticeship to complete, he sought work elsewhere. He was hired at the Herald Republic in Yakima, WA. Even though the weather was a real change for the family; like 23 inches of snow overnight or temperatures that hovered around 100 degrees for a week or more, the family flourished. Roger and his family lived in Yakima for 22 years. During that time they began their "Mini Donut Career" and Phyllis started her consulting business. Even though they loved Yakima, Roger and his wife's dream was always to move to the coast. In 1970 they purchased some property, built a house, quit their Yakima jobs and "retired" to Ocean Park. They greatly enjoyed their comfortable home they built in Ocean Park. The two of them shared work in their mini-donut concession for 19 years, hiring local teenagers to help them out. They traveled to festivals to sell their donuts and, when Kay Buesing asked them to coordinate the vendors for events they thought it would be an easy, fun task. Fun it was; easy may be a stretch. They eventually began to chair some events as well as getting vendors for the events. During their thirty-one years on the Peninsula, they have worn out out three motor homes doing their traveling in the southwest United States.Roger and his wife became active in the community as soon as they settled in. They have been members of the Ocean Park Area Chamber of Commerce and the Beach Barons for thirty years and have held office several times in both organizations.Roger is survived by his wife of sixty plus years Phyllis, sons Ric (Ronda), Jason (Tammy), Jeff (wife Jeanette and sons Cameron and Alex), Jeff (wife Shelly, Megan, Brandon and Andrew) and nephew Daniel Carey. Roger was preceded in death by both parents and his sister.A Celebration of Life Pot Luck has been scheduled for Saturday, November 11th at the Beach Barons Club House on 255th and Sandridge Road, Ocean Park.  Hours are from noon to 3:00 PM.No gifts please but if you wish, donations would be appreciated if made to the Peninsula Humane Society of Pacific County or the charity of your choice.Few people can say they have enjoyed thirty-two years of retirement, but Roger could! Although he enjoyed being a printer, he liked being a retiree better. His guestbook is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.
