Arthur Eugene Schouweiler Jr., affectionately known as Art, passed away on November 13, 2025, in Long Beach, Washington, at the age of 81. Born on February 26, 1944, in Olympia, Washington, he was a proud graduate of North Thurston High School in 1963.
Art dedicated 20 years of his life to his career as a Marine Diesel Engineer with Dunlap Towing. His passion for the water was complemented by his love for boating and fishing, which he enjoyed throughout his life. In 1966, he joined the United States Navy, serving aboard the USS Hassayampa, AO-145, where he earned degrees in Airframe and Power Plant Mechanics and Diesel Marine Mechanics before receiving an honorable discharge. Art was also a card-carrying member of the Inlandboatmen’s Union.
On April 9, 1965, Art married Rae Louise Barnes in a Methodist church in Olympia, Washington. Together they raised a loving family. He is survived by his wife, Rae Louise Schouweiler; daughters Shaunn Schouweiler and partner Charlotte Matlock, Kellee Cook (Schouweiler), and Heather Chibambo (Schouweiler) and spouse Mathambo Chibambo; grandchildren Joelle, Dawson, and Asher; Tayamba, Zikani, and Taanashe; and his sister, Gayle Ede.
Art will be remembered as a caring family member, dedicated father, and doting grandparent. He was known for his gentle spirit, as a tinkerer and mentor, and as an engaging conversationalist. He leaves a lasting legacy of love and fond memories to his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Art and Irene Schouweiler; his sisters, Mary Schouweiler Knopfler and Janelle Schouweiler Springle; and his son-in-law, Mark C. Cook.
