Joanne Lynette Goodman

Joanne Lynette Goodman (Janke) was born on the 18th of December, 1944 to her parents, Lewis Arthur Janke and Helena Kirstein. She has two surviving siblings. Lawrence (Larry) Janke and Linda Lew Rydman (Janke)

Joanne was married to W. Duane Goodman the 30th of March 1968, 4 days before he was drafted into the armed services (US Army). They were initially married by a Justice of the Peace in Vancouver, WA followed by a church wedding on August 15, 1968, as Duane was in transit from his initial Army training at Ft Sam Houston to his permanent duty station at Ft Richardson in Anchorage Alaska. Joanne joined Duane in Alaska in December of 1968, 1 week before Christmas. Joanne returned to Portland in early 1970 to give birth to their 1st child, Gretchen M. Goodman. Duane followed to Portland after his discharge from the service in March of 1970. The birth of a 2nd daughter, Deirdre L Goodman (Welch) followed on December 31, 1971. Then the 3rd child, Gregory M Goodman (Emily) completed their family on August 2nd, 1973.

After grade school, Joanne attended high school at Portland Adventist Academy, Lakewood Academy in Ohio and then finished up her high school years at Washington High School in SE Portland Oregon. Following that, Joanne attended Walla Walla College for 3 years before becoming ill with hepatitis and infectious mono. That caused her to miss significant time in school and she never had the opportunity to go back and finish her degree. It was during the latter part of this illness that she met and started dating Duane, eventually culminating in their marriage on the 30th of March, 1968.

During her marriage they lived in Anchorage AK, McMinnville OR, Portland OR, Walla Walla WA then back to Portland OR where Duane worked at Portland Adventist Medical Center before retirement after 43 years. After Duane’s retirement they moved to the SW Washington coast in Ocean Park, on the Long Beach Peninsula. 

Things Joanne was passionate about: First, was her children. She was the true Jewish mother that watched over her flock, from her kids to her grandkids and any other individuals that she took under her wings. She was also passionate about making a good home for her husband and kids. Early in her marriage, she and Duane made the decision that Joanne would be a stay-at-home mother so that her kids would never experience coming home from school to an empty house. Another passion of hers was reading. Evidence of this is the library of about 1500 books she and Duane have accumulated over the years of their marriage. Her favorite book was the Bible, which she usually read daily.

While in Portland, Joanne also started a tradition of having a yearly Christmas Tea party for the women in her family and friends. It became a full-scale production that required slave labor from her girls and her husband. Then, there were the teapots. What came 1st, the Christmas Tea, or the collection of her teapots isn’t known, but she ended up with between 35-40 teapots of which she was very proud. It’s only fitting that one of her teapots will be used as an urn for her final remains. 

After a multiyear battle with Alzheimer’s, Joanne passed away peacefully in her sleep, with Duane by her side, on Saturday, September 12, 2026 at 06:31 AM.

The essence of Joanne was her spirit of generosity and her loving kind heart. She leaves a legacy that will stay with her family for a very long time.

Joanne is survived by her husband, all 3 of her children (Gretchen, Deirdre, Greg), 4 grandchildren (Nate, Helena, Jim, and Noah), her sister and brother (Linda & Larry) and multiple nieces and nephews.
