Verna Adele Holm (Penttila)
March 30, 1930 – January 1, 2026
Verna Adele Holm, a lifelong resident of Naselle, Washington, passed away peacefully at her home on January 1, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. She was 95 years old.
Born to Waino and Sigrid Penttila, Verna was the youngest of five siblings—Eldred, Eldon, Joseph, and Rose. She spent nearly her entire life on the same property where she was born, with brief periods away to attend Washington State University and to live in Fort Hood, Texas, while her husband Charles “Hoopy” Holm served in the military.
Verna and Charles were married on May 5, 1951, at the Naselle Lutheran Church. They shared 61 years of marriage and raised three children: Steven, Cynthia, and Christopher. Charles preceded her in death in 2012.
A pillar of the Naselle Lutheran Church, Verna played the organ for over 60 years, retiring three times. Her spirited rendition of “Hoosianna” became a local legend. She also sang soprano in the choir, taught in classrooms, and was a familiar presence in the church kitchen. Her musical talents extended to weddings and funerals, often performing at services held by her brother Eldred’s mortuary, Penttila’s Chapel by the Sea.
Verna’s passions included gardening—a gift inherited from her mother—crossword puzzles, and playing Uno with her grandchildren. Proud of her Finnish heritage, she actively participated in the Finnish Folk Festival through choir performances, theatrical plays, and cooking demonstrations.
In her later years, Verna faced dementia, but remained in the comfort of her home thanks to the devoted care of her family and caregiver Renee, whose support was deeply appreciated.
She is survived by her children: Steve (Carolyn) Holm, Cindy (George) Pierce, and Chris Holm; grandchildren Jenny, Mike, John, Georgie, and Sophia; and great-grandchildren Violet and Zdeno. Verna also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to Harbors Home Health and Hospice for their compassionate care during Verna’s final months.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made in Verna’s name to Peaceful Hill Cemetery, PO Box 501, Naselle, WA 98638.
