Ronald Marvin Paavola

September 22, 1932 — February 22, 2019

A fourth generation native of Naselle, Ronald Marvin Paavola, 86, died February 22, 2019 in Astoria. Born at home in Naselle and delivered by a mid-wife, he was the son of Walter and Lulu (Koskela) Paavola. His father was a logger and farmer and Marvin grew up on the family farm where from an early age he valued hard work. He was a graduate of Naselle High School, class of 1950.

In June of 1952 Marvin joined the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas and Travis AFB California prior to his overseas deployment at Yokota AFB Japan until honorably discharged in June of 1956.

Returning to Naselle, Marvin worked in the woods for Johnson Brothers and later for Weyerhaeuser before he and his brother Bob began contract cutting. An on the job injury necessitated a career change and Marvin graduated with an associate degree in criminal justice from Clatsop Community College. He was employed at the Naselle Youth Camp as an assistant counselor until retirement in 1996.

Proud of his military service, Marvin was a member of Astoria American Legion Post #12 and a life member of V.F.W. Post #3721 in Long Beach. Marvin was an avid salmon and sturgeon fisherman, took pride in his rose bushes, enjoyed trips to Nevada with his wife, and cherished memories of a trip with Nobuko to her native land of Japan in 1986. Marvin was also a long-time member of the Naselle Fire Department.

Marvin is survived by daughter Marian Adelle Mischel (Ed) of Forest Grove, Oregon. His beloved wife Nobuko died earlier as did brother Robert and sister Margaret.

Marvin requested no service. He will be interned at Peaceful Hill Cemetery in Naselle next to his wife. Memorials may be made to the Naselle Fire Dept. in care of Penttila's Chapel, PO Box 417, Long Beach, WA 98631. His guestbook is available at www.penttilaschapel.com.
